What the Hannover Schützenfest is

The Hannover Schützenfest is billed as the world's largest marksmen's festival. In 2026 it runs for ten days, from Friday 3 July to Sunday 12 July, on the Schützenplatz in the city. It combines a fairground with rides and food stalls, a beer-tent atmosphere and the traditional culture of Germany's shooting clubs, whose members take part in a large parade through the city.

The planner lists this edition as confirmed. According to the event data, entry to the grounds is free, and there is a fireworks display. Rides, food and drink are paid for individually, so budget for those.

Dates and how they are set

The festival is held in early to mid July and always covers two weekends. In 2026 the first weekend is 3 to 5 July and the second is 10 to 12 July, with the working days in between. The organisers publish the dates long in advance, so the planner can mark them as confirmed.

The daily programme varies: some days are family days with reduced prices on rides, others focus on the evening crowd. The big parade and the fireworks have their own dates within the ten days. Look at the official programme to find them instead of assuming they fall on a weekend, because the exact days are set by the organiser.

Character, sights and food

Expect a mix of old and new. Classic rides, a large Ferris wheel and big thrill rides sit beside beer tents with live music and a lot of regional costume. Marksmen's clubs parade in uniform, and the tradition behind it is something you notice more in the parade than at the fairground.

Typical fairground food is on offer: Bratwurst, roasted almonds, Langos, fish sandwiches and sweets. Hannover has its own local dishes too, so the city centre is a good place for a proper meal before you go. The Herrenhäuser Gärten and the Maschsee are suitable places for a quiet daytime visit, away from the noise of the fairground.

Getting there and where to stay

Hannover is a major rail hub, and the Schützenplatz lies close to the city centre, so you can reach it by Stadtbahn or on foot from the Hauptbahnhof direction. Parking near the fairground is difficult on the busy evenings; use public transport.

Hotels in Hannover are less expensive in summer than during the large trade fairs, though the festival weekends can still drive prices up. If you want a cheaper stay, look at nearby towns such as Celle, Hildesheim or Hameln and take a regional train in. Book early for the two weekends.

Planning around holidays and bridge days in 2026

The ten days cover two full weekends. A visit on Saturday and Sunday needs no vacation days. A long weekend from Friday 3 July to Sunday 5 July costs one day if you arrive before the evening, and the same on 10 to 12 July. Visiting on a weekday, say Monday to Friday of the middle week, would take five vacation days if you want to stay for the entire time.

Niedersachsen has no public holiday in July. The nearest ones are Whit Monday on 25 May and, later in the year, German Unity Day on Saturday 3 October and Reformation Day on Saturday 31 October, both on weekends in 2026, so neither gives a day off. This means there is no bridge day to use, and any longer trip must come from regular leave.

If you travel with children, check the state's school summer holidays for 2026, because they affect when families are free and how busy the family days will be.

Tips and who it suits

The festival suits families, groups of friends and anyone who enjoys a lively fairground without paying for entry. If you prefer a calmer holiday, go on a weekday afternoon, when queues are shorter.

Carry cash for stalls that do not take cards, wear comfortable shoes and check the official programme for the parade, family days and fireworks before you plan your trip.
