What the Wave-Gotik-Treffen is
The Wave-Gotik-Treffen, usually shortened to WGT, is described as the world's largest gathering of the dark-wave and goth scene. It has been held in Leipzig every Pentecost since 1992 and spreads concerts, readings, markets and parties over many venues across the city. It is less a single festival site than a city takeover, and visitors in elaborate black outfits are a common sight on the trams.
The organisers expect around 21,000 guests in 2027.
Dates in 2027 and status
The planner has the 2027 edition running from Friday 14 May to Monday 17 May 2027 and marks it as confirmed. That matches the traditional pattern, Friday to Monday over Pentecost: Pentecost Sunday 2027 is 16 May and Whit Monday 17 May. The line-up and programme grow over the months before, so keep an eye on the official site, and check which ticket type you need, since a festival pass and day options can differ.
Because accommodation is tight, it is worth deciding early, even before the full programme is out.
History and character
The WGT began in 1992 and has become a fixture of the Pentecost weekend in Leipzig. Its venues range from concert halls and clubs to open-air stages and historic spaces. Beyond music, there are readings, theatre, a pagan village with a market, and a Victorian picnic where guests dress in period costume. The atmosphere is friendly and curious rather than intimidating, and non-members are usually welcome to watch from outside the ticketed areas.
The city itself takes part, with shops and cafes adapting to the weekend.
What to see, do and eat
Pick a few concerts and leave room to explore: the markets selling clothing, jewellery and music, the outdoor spaces, and the city's own sights, such as the Nikolaikirche, the Thomaskirche and the Monument to the Battle of the Nations. Try a Saxon plate: Bratwurst, Leipziger Allerlei or a slice of Eierschecke. In warm weather, parks and beer gardens are good places to rest.
Bring shoes you can walk in all day, a light rain layer for May weather and sun protection for outdoor events.
Getting there and where to stay
Leipzig Hauptbahnhof is the best arrival point; trains from Berlin, Dresden and Frankfurt are frequent, but they fill up on the Friday of the festival, so reserve seats. Trams connect the main venues, and a day ticket on local transport is usually worth buying. Camping is available at or near festival grounds, but check the organiser for rules and booking.
Hotels and private rooms are scarce at this weekend. Book as early as you can, or consider staying in nearby towns with a train connection.
Holidays and bridge days in Saxony, 2027
Whit Monday, 17 May 2027, is a public holiday throughout Saxony, so the Friday to Monday festival costs only one vacation day, Friday 14 May. Ascension Day is Thursday 6 May, so a bridge day on Friday 7 May is an earlier chance for a four-day weekend with one day of leave. Corpus Christi on Thursday 27 May is a holiday only in a few Saxon communities, not in Leipzig.
If you want to arrive for a Thursday evening start, take Thursday 13 and Friday 14 May, two days, for a five-day stay from Thursday to Monday. Pentecost itself is a holiday weekend for many travellers, so expect crowded trains, especially on Monday afternoon.
Tips and who it suits
WGT suits fans of gothic, industrial, dark-wave, medieval and related music, and also curious visitors who enjoy a unique subculture event. Tickets and programme details are published by the organisers, so rely on them rather than third-party lists. Check the dress and bag rules for each venue, bring cash for markets and plan transport between venues, as distances add up.
