Cologne Carnival

12 February 2026 – 17 February 2026
Köln, North Rhine-Westphalia

Rule-based. This date is computed from a known, fixed calendar rule, not announced by anyone, but the rule itself isn't in doubt.

The main phase of Cologne Carnival starts with Weiberfastnacht on the Heumarkt and ends with the symbolic burning of the Nubbel. Its high point is the Rosenmontag parade, watched by over a million spectators, so inner-city accommodation books out months ahead.

What Cologne Carnival is

Cologne Carnival, locally called the fifth season, has a main phase that the planner shows for 2026 from Thursday 12 February to Tuesday 17 February. It begins with Weiberfastnacht, when the Heumarkt fills with costumed crowds, and ends with the symbolic burning of the Nubbel. The high point is the Rosenmontag parade on Monday 16 February, which the event data says is watched by more than a million spectators.

The planner lists this edition as rule-based, not as confirmed by the organiser. That means the dates were derived from the carnival calendar rule tied to Easter rather than taken from a published announcement, so confirm them with the festival committee or the city before booking anything.

Dates and how they are set

Carnival dates follow Easter. Easter Sunday in 2026 is 5 April, and counting back 48 days gives Rosenmontag on Monday 16 February. Weiberfastnacht is the Thursday before, 12 February, Veilchendienstag the Tuesday after, 17 February, and Ash Wednesday, the end of carnival, is 18 February.

That rule is well established, which is why the dates are credible, but the planner still marks them as rule-based because the individual events, such as parade start times, session evenings and street party zones, are announced by the organisers. Treat the dates as a strong guide and the details as something to verify.

Character, sights and food

Cologne's carnival is street-based and informal. On Weiberfastnacht people in costume celebrate in the old town districts, the Altstadt and the Zülpicher Straße area among them. On Rosenmontag the parade moves through the city with floats, bands and thrown sweets, called Kamelle. Many carnival groups also stage sessions in halls earlier in the season.

The food is pragmatic: Kölsch in small glasses, Himmel un Ääd (black pudding with apple and potato), Halve Hahn (a rye roll with cheese, despite the name) and Mettbrötchen. Outside the parade routes the Cologne Cathedral, the Rhine promenade and the museums are calmer, though the cathedral's surroundings are busy throughout carnival.

Getting there and where to stay

Cologne's main station sits right beside the cathedral and is a major hub for long-distance and regional trains, which is the most practical way to arrive. Many local lines run extra trains on the big days, and the station can be congested, so allow extra time.

The event data warns that inner-city accommodation books out months ahead. If you did not book early, consider towns along the S-Bahn and regional lines, such as Bonn, Leverkusen, Bergisch Gladbach or Düsseldorf, and take the train in. Expect high prices and strict cancellation terms in the city itself.

Planning around holidays and bridge days in 2026

Rosenmontag is not a statutory public holiday in Nordrhein-Westfalen, although many employers, schools and shops close or reduce hours, so check your contract and your company's practice. A full trip from Weiberfastnacht to Veilchendienstag covers Thursday, Friday, Monday and Tuesday as working days, which is four vacation days, with the weekend of 14 and 15 February in between.

A shorter option is the Thursday, Friday and the weekend, which costs two days, or Saturday to Monday for one day. If you only want the parade, taking Monday 16 February is enough, making a three-day weekend for a single vacation day. There is no official public holiday near the dates: Good Friday is 3 April and Easter Monday 6 April, nearly two months later. Ascension is 14 May.

Because carnival moves with Easter, the same event in 2027 falls on 8 February for Rosenmontag, so do not reuse this year's dates for next year.

Tips and who it suits

Carnival suits people who enjoy costumes, crowds and spontaneous street parties. It is less suitable for anyone who wants a quiet city trip, and families with small children should pick the daytime events and avoid the late evening crowds.

Wear a costume, because it is part of the culture, and carry little: pickpocketing and lost phones are common in crowds. Use the train, keep a plan for getting back, and check the official sources for the parade route and times.
